Director Biography - Zoe Pressman

A rare San Francisco native, Zoe Pressman directed and wrote throughout her four years at Northwestern University in Chicago, from being the co-creator of an NUCH1 web series, "Assistance," to directing the 2015 NU Sitcom Pilot, "Out of Sync."

She also did the Creative Writing for the Media Module, a two quarter program where she completed two pilot scripts, and the Directing for the Screen Module, a twelve person selective cohort that focuses on the study and practice of narrative filmmaking. This short was made through the Directing for the Screen Module.

As the daughter of a Jewish single mom, Zoe is committed to showing "non-traditional" families on screen, because "non-traditional" doesn't mean "non-existent."

Director Statement

For "Thanksgiving Guest," the most exciting part was that the film was improvised and devised. I had constructed a detailed outline ahead of time and led rehearsals to establish relationships and history, but the conversation on set was improvised by my actors. It was crucial for me to preserve natural actions and reactions as the story progresses.

Based off of a real CraigsList post where an ex-convict offers to piss off his date's family in exchange for a free, home-cooked Thanksgiving meal—this short focuses on why someone would take him up on that offer, and whether or not that fractured family could come back together. Like the rest of the world, family in Thanksgiving Guest is made up of many parts; Eva herself is a young, bisexual, biracial, Jewish woman.
