Independent film director Sev DeMy has been carving his niche in the Los Angeles film scene with three films in four years. He gained recognition with his first short film Doo Doo’s Revenge (2015), an explosive short about a child facing neglect but ultimately takes matters into his own hands. In Sev's words, "I want to make the films that helped me get through childhood, that presented complexities in simple lives and became classics because we said so, not always because of critical acclaim." Doo Doo’s Revenge went on to be screened at the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Maryland International Film Festival Hagerstown, the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival and air nationwide on "African American Shorts" and ABFF for Aspire TV.
His second short, Where Branches Break (2017), a film about an ex-convict becoming a killer Uber driver is much more than it seems. Sev has a signature style that weaves layered themes in urban settings with fully crafted characters. Again, Sev crafted a stratified story that he says, " is a dynamic metaphor for the Black American family". Navigating through Black migration and Biblical analogies with edgy performances and an impressive score, Sev has drawn from Ralph Ellison to Ghostface Killer continuing to make films that are style and story heavy but never sacrificing one for the other.
Sev's latest work, {BLACK title here} is a TV pilot with potential to explore identity and success in surreal way. The pilot follows James on his day off from work when everything goes wrong at home.
In addition to directing, Sev has always worn the hat of writer and producer on his projects. A graduate of Hampton University, his psychology background is evident in the characters he creates. Sev is a working cable reality producer as well, adding his sharp humor to some of America's favorite shows.
