When I was 12, I helped my dad find an apartment before he moved out. I could sense how difficult it was for him, and I wanted to do anything to help. As a child I was used to caring for adults instinctively, and in that process I’m sure I held back some of my own feelings. I’m interested in exploring how a young girl navigates these circumstances and finds ways to express herself. What happens when a child can’t help caring for a parent in need of support, and when a parent can’t protect their child from difficult experiences? On one level, this story is a personal journey of displacement–the first time Agnes experiences loss and change in her physical environment, symbolic of her family life. On another level, it’s a reflection on the changing city and the ever-increasing difficulty to find a home here.
