Reflets

Reflections
In 1918, Mary Pickford played two opposing parts in Marshall Neilan's film: Stella Maris, the perfect but bedridden daughter, and Unity Blake, who grew up in an orphanage and was mistreated by everyone. The mirrors in the film support this dual role, which is played out in the society of the rich and the poor, goodness and badness, true feelings and hidden truths. The water reflects the sun and the sky, the trees underline their verticality with shadows, the waterfalls mark the passage of time. A painting by Stefania Kenley from her Imprints series, « Starfish, broken fishing nets and mooring ropes » echoes the materiality of images.

Director Statement

The mirrors in the film « Stella Maris » confront the characters in the same way that the reflections of the Sun in the water and the shadows of the tall trees accompany them. The opposition between Unity and Stella Maris, both played by Mary Pickford, lies in their parallel lives, in the coexistence of suffering and joy, when even society reflects individual destinies. Anna Maria Friman's voice in the plainsong ‘Stella Maris’ is orchestrated by Moby.
