I am not interested in representing an object as it appears in reality, and often the final image is very different from the initial subject. I prefer to manipulate the original file to create images with shapes and colors that appeal to me.
Around the age of twenty, I approached the study of the History of Art, as an autodidact, and I began my personal photographic research. I got fascinated by the artistic Avant-garde of the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries, and also the artistic currents of Minimalism and Conceptual Art.
All these artistic phenomena attracted me mostly because they focused on the analysis of the visual medium, than to the staging of reality and its representation, as the history of Art had instead accustomed us.
In recent years, I have focused on everyday objects and integrated AI into my practice, creating a number of video and photographic series. I have also produced numerous short films, composing their soundtracks, several of which have been awarded at festivals. My work is published on my website and has been featured in a number of physical and online events.
The video I am presenting is part of the “Colors and Shapes” project. This project consists of a series of photographs and videos, which can be viewed on my webpage www.giorgiogerardi.com/colors-and-shapes/.In this creative process, I also employed the generative potential of Artificial Intelligence.
In the videos and images that make up this series, the focus is entirely on color and form. It is a visual universe devoid of discernible subjects, traditional representations, recognizable figures, or explicit narratives. There is no hidden meaning to decipher, no message to interpret—only the intrinsic presence of color and shape.
The works do not aim to communicate a particular meaning but rather to exist as autonomous visual entities. The absence of a central subject is not perceived as emptiness, but as a way to create a space for observation unburdened by the need for explanation. Colors and shapes move through the visual field with variations in rhythm and direction. They combine, separate, and transform, generating configurations in continuous flux.
In the presented videos, the boundaries between colors and shapes are soft and fluid, allowing for smooth and seamless transitions across visual areas. Warm tones blend with cool ones, following curved lines and irregular movements that may suggest the flow of an expanding liquid. The colors do not appear static but are in a state of constant transformation.
The forms also exhibit a predominance of soft, curved lines, intertwining and unfolding through space. The overall composition is characterized by a continuous sense of motion, lacking fixed or sharply defined elements. The emphasis is not on precise definition, but on the overall visual effect, the rhythm of chromatic variation, and the interaction between components. Dynamic layering and overlapping contribute to a sense of depth and visual richness.
By removing the end credits (where present), the first and last frames of each video are identical, allowing for a seamless loop.
