The Law of Saxony

After 14 years in France, and following the fall of the Assad regime, the Malas brothers return to Damascus, where they begin working on their theatrical project, which they had started many years ago in their room.

As they revisit their memories, they recall the Egyptian film Al-Ghoul (1983) — produced the same year they were born — and find themselves facing the same fate portrayed in the film, perhaps under the new government.

بعد 14 عاماً في فرنسا، وبعد سقوط نظام الأسد، يعود الأخوان ملص إلى دمشق، حيث يبدآن العمل على مشروعهما المسرحي الذي كانا قد بدآه منذ سنوات طويلة في غرفتهما. وأثناء استعادتهما لذكرياتهما، يتذكران الفيلم المصري الغول (1983) — الذي أُنتج في العام نفسه الذي وُلدا فيه — ليجدا نفسيهما يواجهان المصير ذاته الذي يطرحه الفيلم، ربما في ظل الحكومة الجديدة.

Director Biography - MALAS TWINS

The Malas brothers are two Syrian filmmakers and artists born in 1983. They jointly develop a body of work that combines theatre, cinema, and performance. After beginning their careers in Syria, they continued their artistic path in exile, particularly in France, where they keep creating projects that explore memory, exile, and political issues. Their practice lies at the boundary between documentary and fiction, with a particular focus on personal and historical narratives. Through their works, they question the relationships between art, power, and identity in the context of the contemporary Middle East.

Les frères Malas sont deux cinéastes et artistes syriens nés en 1983. Ils développent ensemble un travail mêlant théâtre, cinéma et performance. Après leurs débuts en Syrie, ils poursuivent leur parcours en exil, notamment en France, où ils continuent à créer des projets artistiques explorant la mémoire, l’exil et les questions politiques. Leur démarche se situe à la frontière entre le documentaire et la fiction, avec une attention particulière portée aux récits personnels et historiques. À travers leurs œuvres, ils interrogent les rapports entre art, pouvoir et identité dans le contexte du Moyen-Orient contemporain.

الأخوان ملص هما مخرجان وفنّانان سوريان وُلدا عام 1983. يطوّران معاً عملاً فنياً يجمع بين المسرح والسينما والأداء. بعد بداياتهما في سوريا، واصلا مسيرتهما في المنفى، خاصة في فرنسا، حيث استمرا في إنجاز مشاريع فنية تتناول الذاكرة والمنفى والأسئلة السياسية. تتميز تجربتهما بالاشتغال على الحدود بين الوثائقي والروائي، مع اهتمام خاص بالسرديات الشخصية والتاريخية. من خلال أعمالهما، يطرحان أسئلة حول العلاقة بين الفن والسلطة والهوية في سياق الشرق الأوسط المعاصر.
