In the Light of Time

Centered amidst prehistoric rock art sites along the Indus and Zanskar rivers, the film is a ‘love story’ between past, present and future. This archeological peculiarity in Ladakh is a segue into a time ‘before time’ that begs us to ask: How can artifacts of the past inform our need to create something that will outlast us?

Director Biography - Amogh Chauhan, Jahnavi Pradeep

Jahnavi Pradeep: Jahnavi Pradeep is an interdisciplinary creative based out of India. She is an alum of Mount Holyoke College (2023), where she double majored in English and Film Media Theater. After her undergraduate studies in the States, she returned to India as a fellow for Auroville Film Institute and University of Ladakh’s Open Space Documentary Arts Program (2025). Her artistic practice runs parallel to her personal search for roots and identity, finding direction through her experiments across writing, film, photography, archiving, and new media formats such as installations. Jahnavi’s projects have taken her to Karnataka, Ladakh, Pondicherry, and Tamil Nadu so far, reiterating her creative journey as an ongoing process of remembering and building connections across time and space. For example, In 'In the Light of Time' (2025), her encounters with Ladakh’s prehistoric rock art led her to pursue a second film project titled 'Excavating the Present' (2025) that looks at these archeological artifacts in connection with South India and her own familial ancestry. Looking forward, she hopes to continue to push the boundaries of the multimodal quality and educational potential of art and storytelling.

Amogh Chauhan: Amogh is a multidisciplinary creative from Solan, Himachal Pradesh. After pursuing a Bachelors in Computer Science Engineering from Savitribai Phule Pune University (2023), his continuous personal engagements with art and media led him to filmmaking. In 2024 he attended a documentary workshop that was organized by Auroville Film Institute (AVFI) with filmmaker R.V Ramani. Here, he had space to think about the forms of expressions that came from documenting the personal. Suddenly, a door opened. He began thinking about the intersectionality of visual cultures, literature, technology, architecture and philosophy. These reflections translated into projects such as photo essays, animations, design work, and films. For example, in 2024 itself, his practice was further informed by experience when he traveled to Ladakh with AVFI. Here, the landscape and culture introduced certain sensibilities to his work. ‘In the Light of Time’ (2025) was a project born out of the intrigue on being the prehistoric rock art in Ladakh. In further explorations about rock art and ancestry, he is working on another project titled ‘Excavating the Present (2025).

Director Statement

We were first introduced to the Ladakh petroglyph as a part of a landscape tour organized by our ongoing Open Space Documentary Arts program. There was an instant curiosity over these prehistoric elements, casually scattered amidst the everyday, be it by highway thoroughfares, behind household compounds, or amidst wastelands. These artworks, void of existing narratives, evoked a sense of wonder. In studying these ‘non-reproducing’ artifacts, we were curious how to give life to the immobile through a cinematic experimentation with senses of movement. The project was a series of trials and errors on understanding how to make meaning. But it is important to note that our cinematic engagements only created a larger depth of intrigue rather than settling it or providing any answers. Herein, ‘In the Light of Time’ was just the start of a journey. Subsequently, we put up an installation titled ‘Excavating the Present,’ drawing on our continued learnings centered on the archaeological artefact and our desires to research in new territories to draw further connections across space and time.
