Philip Boston, a celebrated director and producer with a career spanning over 25 years in Hollywood, hails from the world-renowned surfing destination of Margaret River, Western Australia. His creative journey began at the Mount Lawley Academy of Performing Arts in Perth, Western Australia. In the early '90s, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he first made his mark as an art director for music videos by iconic artists like Will Smith and Britney Spears. His talent quickly propelled him into directing commercials, television shows, and feature films. Over the years, Boston has written and directed more than a hundred commercials for global brands and has led the action direction for major Hollywood films, including Chasing Mavericks and Point Break. He is also known for directing acclaimed documentaries such as Billabong Odyssey and spearheading campaigns for industry giants like Samsung, Red Bull, and ABC Television, solidifying his reputation as a visionary force in the entertainment industry.
This film is a deeply personal project, shaped by my experience as a director of action films and my life as a lifelong surfer from the big-wave location of Margaret River. My conversations with, and knowledge of, some of the world’s best big-wave surfers have given me a profound understanding of the sacrifices and risks these athletes face. Many, like Todd Chesser, Shane Dorian, and Greg Long, are driven not only by their passion for the sport but also by the need to support their families. However, only a few manage to make significant money from their endeavors, and some have even paid with their lives in pursuit of glory.
The story centers on a retired big-wave surfer who, despite the passage of time and the weight of significant personal burdens, embarks on one final quest to reclaim the glory of his past. In this narrative, the ocean is not just a backdrop but a powerful metaphor for the protagonist’s internal struggles—a force as unpredictable and overwhelming as the social and economic inequalities that define our world. For him, surfing is more than a sport; it is a lifeline to a past that seems increasingly out of reach as he battles serious financial troubles and his daughter’s deteriorating health. These pressures leave him with no choice but to go against his wife’s wishes, leading to a desperate and heart-wrenching decision, highlighting the widening gap between the privileged and those who struggle to survive.
At its core, this film explores the universal human experience and the enduring bonds we share with our loved ones. It underscores the reality that financial pressures and the struggle to care for one’s family can lead to difficult and sometimes devastating choices. In doing so, it exposes the systemic failures in our social welfare and health systems, which often exacerbate personal struggles, pushing individuals to their limits.
Through this story, I aim to capture the essence of living with passion and purpose amid overwhelming challenges. It is a tribute to the steadfast commitments a father makes to his family, the enduring power of love, and the relentless drive to make a meaningful impact in the face of adversity. Additionally, it serves as a reflection on the societal shortcomings that compound these struggles, shining a light on the deep sadness of a world where so many are left fighting for their place and their loved ones.
