Peyton Miller is an emerging New York City based filmmaker. Through her work, she aims to explore female experiences from both a realistic and surrealist tone. She has gained experience in all stages of filmmaking while working for companies like A24, Searchlight, TIME, and HBO. Most recently she assisted the acclaimed director Rupert Wyatt on his latest big-budget film.
As a director, I’m interested in how we talk about the taboo; the things that, whether for political or social reasons, we are “not supposed to talk about.” I love investigating how film can highlight miscommunications and the things that are often left unsaid. Upon my first read of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, I was instantly drawn to how Mae's fear of opening up is at odds with her desire to be honest.
In this film, I aim to explore how external forces can devastate young love. The relationship between Mae and Jonathan is forever altered by, quite literally, the weight of the world (and, specifically, the political turmoil that currently plagues our country) that they are too young to face. No matter how much the character of Jonathan might love Mae, there is a limit to his ability to help and comfort Mae through a situation such as this. Girls like Mae, across the country, are left completely and utterly alone to grapple with the consequences of doing what is right for them and their bodies and the multitude of their emotions.
Something has to change.
