Dear Jurors and Viewers:

Kintohpatatin(Justice)-Chéng誠(Honesty)” (Hui/Baedak,2024) is co- directed, written, and produced by multi award-winning emerging/developing filmmaker, Canadian Institutes of Health Research Vanier Scholar, and global Poz POC immigrant settler HIV/AIDS, Undetectable=Untransmittable, and #SayZero advocate Christian Hui, MSW, PhD(c) [“Walking in These Shoes”(Lopez/Hui, 2022], and Indigenous Cree Metis environmental, sexual reproductive and women’s rights advocate Andrea Baedak.

This collaborative visual bricolage offers stunning natural and experimental visuals and split-screens, which are paired with Indigenous drumming by Baedek, which signifies the heartbeat amongst many Indigenous communities, and original composition by Stephen Laing. Through the textural auto-biographical haikus and justice-seeking storytelling of the films’ creators, the work provides a glimpse of how the historical, relational, systemic, political, structural, and environmental all account for the wholistic well-being of a multicultural society.

This intimate short film narrates the complex intersecting Indigenous-settler identities and witnessed relations between the First Peoples of Turtle Island (Canada) and first-generation (im)migrant settlers, and questions how collective actions through One Health are required to challenge and counter the perverse political and neoliberal subjugation of the masses through living in a good way, reconciliation with Indigenous Communities, and ensuring that any forms of justice–including health justice–must be centered upon honesty.

As the world closes in towards 2030 where many of the Sustainable Development Goals are lagging behind targets, including Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-being for All, Goal 10 on Reduced Inequalities, Goal 13 on Climate Action, and Goal 13 on Life on Land, “Kintohpatatin(Justice)-Chéng誠(Honesty)” is a sincere standing call to action for all to engage in reflection on how everyone can engage in honest and proactive justice-inspired collective action to restore relations with Indigenous Peoples and Communities on Turtle Island and globally, as well as investing in solidarity movements to advocate for historically oppressed communities and to care for Mother Earth for a better future for all.

To All Our Relations,
Christian Hui and Andrea Baedak
