Youth News@PTS: Our Song

Born in 2000, they are already 20 years old. We wanted to find out what youngsters in the 21st century think about society and the future. For youngsters aged 18 to 20, our society recognizes them as adults and should be able to be responsible for their own lives. But with the majority of them still in school, they find life and the future a daunting challenge. However, the mixed feelings of growing up aren’t the main focus on mainstream media nor social media. Therefore, we invited people from this age group to submit videos to express their concerns. We also relayed their thoughts to a famous indie band in Taiwan, Your Woman Sleep with Others, and asked them to compose a song that represents this age group.

Director Statement

When we claim that we’ve “grown-up”, what we’ve described may be the changing of the mindsets, the accumulation of our knowledge, the more flexible attitudes, or the more openness and willingness to initiate a dialogue. But combining it with time, like coming of age or 20 years old, for example, “grown-up” doesn’t seem so attractive anymore. It’s more about heaviness and helplessness instead, and you feel that you have to cave in to reality. It comes with discipline into adulthood; you need to behave and live a certain way at a certain age. Everywhere you turn, you see rules; it’s nothing sweet at all. The thoughts about adulthood are the initiative of our show, and through this project, we hope to offer a chance to youngsters to convey their perplexities and perspectives about society, so they can be seen and connect with the world, therefore have the passion and faith to face the future.
