Mosquito: A Fistful of Bitcoins (2016)

Mosquito: A Fistful of Bitcoins is the debut feature film of film-making duo Tom Block and Laura Revell, both 23 years of age. Self-funded with an estimated total budget of only £2000, this quirky comedy is an accomplished exercise in no-budget film-making resourcefulness, aimed at the Internet generation.

Tom Block and Laura Revell started developing and filming Mosquito in the summer of 2013 during a vacation on the Canary Island La Palma, where Tom was brought up. Mosquito was then completed on a part-time basis over the following two years in the UK, alongside studies and full-time work. The film was shot solely on one Canon 5Dmkii.

Logline:

A girl from the future is teleported into the present day. Will she be able to save the world from the emerging Internet dictatorship into which she was born?

Synopsis:

Young Mosquito goes about her daily life in the post-apocalyptic wastelands of 2084. All of a sudden, she finds herself teleported into the present day, where the eccentric scientist Albert has just tested his new invention on her: the Timeotronic 5000. Things get off to a shaky start between the two until Albert introduces Mosquito to the Internet - his favourite pastime but her worst enemy. Will Mosquito be able to prevent the emerging digital dictatorship that she was born into?

Director Statement

Making a feature film with just under £2,000 is insane (on the brink of sanity!), but that's also why I'm so proud of this project. Laura and I spent the last 2 years sacrificing almost all of our free time for it, multitasking permanently alongside full-time work and studies... It was extremely challenging, but I guess that the more challenging a project proves to be, the more obsessed one becomes with it... and the more obsessed one becomes with it, the more relief one feels when the last pieces of it come together... and that is how I feel now that Mosquito is finished: very relieved and very proud!

It's been an absolute roller coaster ride with lots of learning curves, and although the result is far from perfect, I'm very happy with it. Mosquito was made with next to nothing and nonetheless it achieves many things that many big-budget films don't… or so I hope…

Lots of love to all of you and I hope you enjoy the film,

Tom
