Experiencing Interruptions?

Aleatories From An Echo

As a musical animation motion picture, Aleatories From An Echo is a study in how chance occurrences can be tossed about, re-imagined, distorted, and manipulated through extemporaneous processes to the point where their primary and ancillary elements begin to create form. Minute as well as overarching structures, though more the consequence of process than pre-considered material, result in a sort of reciprocating media where images give voice to abstract time structures and sound provides a canvas for artistic motion. Chance is impacted by whim and order is poked full of holes, all in the service of a unified and aesthetically engaging artistic experience.

Director Statement

This work is the result of a mutual initial inspiration from the ideas of chance music and what an “aleatory” mechanism or motivation to initiate and create a sound or image might be. These ideas have many antecedents, mainly in the twentieth century from Dada to Fluxus and the multivarious contributions in between. There are many salient contributions from artists and musicians such as Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen and others. Although these ideas involve chance and the introduction of randomness to the process, ironically, through our different creative methods and practices, every note and movement of an image, was thoroughly conceived and executed. Yet the essence of what might be called aleatory may be perceived in the sound/image structure of this piece and it is that opening to chance that holds fascination.
