The bicycle has been an important pillar throughout history, from its invention to the present day. This two-wheeled vehicle reflects an evolution in technology, engineering, and society. It was a very significant invention in 19th-century society, created by a man named Karl von Drais, a prominent researcher in Germany. Since its creation in 1817, the bicycle has undergone many changes: from the pedals to the wheels. All of which were made by important men of that era. In general terms, it was a device made by and for men.
Years after the bicycle’s invention, upper-class women began to gain significant power through this vehicle, making it a new means of social advancement. At the time, women were “forbidden” from going out in public without a man’s supervision—specifically their spouse— since behavior manuals of the period dictated that a woman’s duty was to focus on caregiving and household matters.
Little by little, the role of women in mainstream histories has undergone several transformations and shifts in perspective. Thanks to the waves of feminism, the recognition of women in history has been, and continues to be established. One aspect of this recognition is the right to inhabit space. Belonging to the city and being able to navigate it by bicycle has given many women a new platform to express their experiences in public spaces. Many of them are still actively fighting, as exclusion and harassment in these spaces (the city) persist to this day.
