Writer and Director Angie Kilsby was the recipient of the national AACTA and Sony Pitch Focus competition in 2023. She has a BA Screenwriting graduate from the Victorian College of the Arts and has since gained experience on a diverse range of narrative and visual arts projects. She has interned at Carver Films and has worked closely with production companies such as Wildebeest and Pork Store.
Being of Thai and Scottish descent, Angie is deeply curious about human stories, how we relate to one another and ultimately how we understand ourselves. Her cinematic work honours both the light and dark of stories with a compelling sensitivity and honesty.
She is also the Founder and Co-Creative Director of Sunburnt, a film-focused collective which hosts monthly screenings and multidisciplinary events. Her ambition is to establish the collective as a production company for independent film and art projects to be held and supported.
Ode is a story that was vital for me to write in order to process coming out of an unhealthy relationship. Stories of queer relationships often cover the beginning of love, but not what the end can look like.
This is a film that abstracts the process of grief, challenging the notions we have about ourselves and highlighting the complexities of how our internal dialogue can dictate our emotional landscape. It touches on the hysteria of love, queer heartache and mental health.
Throughout the process of creating Ode, I intended to humanise mental health experiences and shed light on the complexities of overcoming heartbreak through a queer lens. Seeing this film from ideation to completion has given me the courage to continue to tell stories that are necessary to be told.
