A filmmaker born in rural Northern Ontario and shaped by the high-stakes sets of Toronto. I merge raw, atmospheric storytelling with technical precision to create immersive narrative fiction that finds the extraordinary in the mundane.
Nicholas Koscik is an award-winning filmmaker and production sound mixer based in Toronto. Originally from the small town of Englehart, Ontario, Nicholas is the Founder and Creative Director of Lone Pine Media, where he has cultivated a visually meticulous, "every frame a painting" approach across narrative fiction, documentary, and high-end commercial work.
His creative perspective is shaped by the contrast between the industrial, isolated landscapes of Northern Ontario and the fast-paced production hubs of Toronto. This duality informs a directorial voice that balances intimate, character-driven storytelling with the technical scale and discipline required of modern cinema.
Nicholas's work has earned significant international recognition. His documentary short, Dear Friend, Where Have You Gone?, was named Best Documentary Short at Toronto Film Week and received an Award of Excellence at the Canada Shorts Film Festival. He first gained wider attention with Nature Boy, which swept the Toronto Smartphone Film Festival—winning Best Picture and Best Sound—before earning the Grand Jury Prize at the African Smartphone International Film Festival.
Alongside his directing work, Nicholas is a seasoned production sound mixer with over a decade of experience on major film and television sets. His sound department credits include high-profile series such as The Umbrella Academy, What We Do in the Shadows, and Star Trek: Discovery, where working at the highest levels of production has instilled a technical rigour that directly informs his filmmaking.
This "ears-first" philosophy results in immersive, atmospheric films that challenge audiences both visually and sonically. Nicholas treats sound not as a post-production afterthought, but as the foundational element of the cinematic experience; a conviction currently being explored in his psychological thriller, Acrylic & Bile.

Northern Roots: Originally from Englehart, a Northern Ontario town of only 1,500 people, Nicholas's creative voice is rooted in the silence and isolation of the rural North.
The Handle: His online handle, @nickthesoundgrip, is a nod to a viral industry meme; he keeps the moniker as a tribute to the crew community and his "boots-on-the-ground" beginnings.
Professional Foundation: Having worked in the sound department for major series like The Umbrella Academy and Star Trek: Discovery, Nicholas brings the technical rigour of big-budget productions to independent narrative film.
Ears-First: He operates under a strict "ears-first" philosophy, often developing the sonic textures and atmospheric requirements of a scene before finalizing the visual blocking.
Entrepreneurial Spirit: Nicholas is the founder of The OK Boomer Co., a manufacturer of specialized products designed for film and television sound technicians.
"The ear is profound, whereas the eye is frivolous, too easily satisfied." — Robert Bresson, Notes on the Cinematograph
