My Name is Jannes
The documentary “My name is Jannes” portrays the life of Jannes Manderfeld. Jannes is 18 years old and is modest but smart. According to his kindergarten teacher, Jannes could be good at whatever he wants because he is very sporty, competitive and has a healthy set of brains. As a teenager Jannes played lots of soccer. When he stops playing soccer his father told him to find another hobby, he told him that he would gain weight if he didn’t. Together with his brother Jannes starts training in the shed and quickly notices his increase in muscle mass. One day Jannes comes across a video of a bodybuilder and decides to want that as well. On his 15th birthday Jannes decides to take his training more seriously by going to the gym to gain even more muscle mass and distinguish himself from other people. This went so well, that in Jannes’ own opinion, he has more muscle mass than Arnold Schwarzenegger had on that age. Jannes has a coach and they know for sure that Jannes will make it to the top during his first competition in October 2017. Jannes strives for a perfect body, but he will never be satisfied. Yet he has a dream to become the best bodybuilder of the world in a few years and to become the youngest mister Olympia. His way to perfection and his commitment for bodybuilding, have been recorded in this documentary. This documentary takes place in Den Helder and Beverwijk; most of the time at home, at his grandparents’ house, in the gym and the Kennemer Theater during the game. His mother and his grandparents are very proud of him and they are very happy for Jannes; for the fact that he is doing something that makes him happy. Nevertheless, it becomes clear that his grandfather and grandmother do not have an idea, what bodybuilding exactly means and includes, that they do not notice that Jannes will never be satisfied with himself, that he always will be striving to get most out of himself and even is willing to give his life for bodybuilding. But his mother is afraid that Jannes will not get old if he will continue his life this way. Jannes still lives with his mother.
They are having discussions about how far Jannes is willing to go for bodybuilding. The question remains how long his mother can adopt home to the extreme life of Jannes. The documentary ends on the day of the competition where Jannes will win his first competition as young talent.

My name is Jip Haghuis and I am 26 years old. My Name is Jannes is my first documentary.
With this film I hope to give a more complete picture of the life of a bodybuilder than people generally have. What choices does a bodybuilder have to make and are there things he will encounter if he really chooses this sport? This documentary provides insight into the thoughts of Jannes and the thoughts of his family about Jannes' choices.
