Selected as one of the top 5 new filmmakers by the prestigious Asian-American Film Lab and New York Women in Film and Television, for her 2012 directorial debut THE WEDDING, TOY LEI is a multi-talented director, actor, fight choreographer and swordswoman. As a director, Lei has worked with Emmy award-winning cast and crew, and has won multiple Film, Best Actress, Best Action, Best Stunts awards across the breadth of her projects, and she has screened at prestigious festivals such as Etheria and San Diego Comic-con. In 2019 her feature-length script of BOXER was a semifinalist at the iconic Austin Film Fest. In addition, in 2019, she attended the NYWIFT FS2P directing lab in New York, and has just now, finished her film MOON which was shot as part of the Women in Media CAMERAderie production lab. As a staunch defender of pop entertainment (invite her to your trivia team), she believes that story always has to go down smooth with popcorn. Make sure there's plenty of butter and salt. Lei is a proud mom to her puffy white dog, Wilfred.
MOON is a magical realism film about a near death experience. The script sat on my harddrive for 10 years and finally was finished during the deep lockdown of the pandemic - when the George Floyd riots started right outside my door in downtown Los Angeles. Even with senseless death, there is always hope. There is always connection.
