Metastatic breast cancer is the most severe stage of breast cancer with no cure. The patient has to live with the cancer for the rest of their life. The five-year survival rate is only 20%.
The day I met Canan Perdahlı, the Founding Chairwoman of Metastatic Breast Cancer Association, the idea of making a documentary on the subject occurred. My first thought was to tell the disease through women with cancer by getting support of Canan and the association.
As the works progressed, my approach to the subject changed. Compared to ordinary breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is a lifelong disease that requires living with cancer. Addressing such a disease only from a short slice of life would be a repetition of the previous examples, preventing us from seeing the subject as a whole.
I decided to break general cycle of clichés like “cancer, chemotherapy, hair loss, beating the cancer” and focus not on the disease, but on life. With Canan’s approval, I started to shoot a broad period of her life.
When we started the documentary, Canan was completing her 7th year with the disease. Despite being the founding chairwoman of the only association in Turkey, Canan had only seen a person living with the disease for 8 years at most in Turkey. She was aware of the existence of a few patients abroad who had lived over 10 years only through articles.
So I started to shoot Canan’s life. I followed Canan from her 7th to 11th years with the disease. I shot Canan’s life, her relationships, her disease and association activities with observationally. I focused directly on Canan’s life, not the disease. The cancer was living and progressing with her.
Medical definitions of the disease and treatments, doctors and psychologists were not included in the documentary; instead a patient’s perspective is followed.
I believe that the content we obtained has reached a place that has never been done before not only in Turkey but also in the world. The record-breaking survival of a patient who was not expected to live another year was presented.

Metastatik Meme Kanseri iyileşme şansı olmayan, hastanın yaşamının sonuna kadar kanserle yaşamak zorunda olduğu en ağır seviyeli meme kanseri. Hastaların 5 yılı tamamlama oranı sadece %20.
Metastatik Meme Kanseri Derneği’nin kurucu başkanı Canan Perdahlı’yla ilk tanıştığımız gün, konuyla ilgili bir belgesel yapma fikri ortaya çıktı. İlk düşüncem, Canan’ın ve derneğin desteğini alarak hastalığı kanserli kadınlar üzerinden anlatmak şeklindeydi.
Çalışmaların ilerlemesiyle konuya yaklaşımımda değişiklikler oldu. Sıradan meme kanserine kıyasla, metastatik meme kanseri ömür boyu süren, kanserle yaşamayı gerektiren bir hastalık. Böylesine bir hastalığı sadece kısa bir hayat kesitinden ele almak hem bütünü görmemizi engelleyecek, hem de dünyada zaten yapılmış örneklerin bir tekrarı olacaktı.
Genel klişe olan “kanser, kemoterapi, saçı dökülmesi, kanseri yendi” döngüsünden çıkmaya, hastalığa değil, yaşama odaklanmaya karar verdim. Canan’ın da onayıyla, onun hayatından geniş bir süreci çekmeye başladım.
Böylece Canan’ın hayatını filme almaya başladım. Belgesele başladığımız zaman Canan hastalıkla 7.yılını henüz tamamlıyordu. Türkiye’deki tek derneğin kurucu başkanı olmasına karşın, Canan hastalıkla en çok 8 yıl yaşayan birini görmüştü.
8, 9, 10 derken Canan’ı hastalıkla 11.yılına kadar takip ettim. Gözlemsel çekimlerle Canan’ın hayatı, ilişkileri, hastalığı ve dernek faaliyetlerini çektim. Hastalığını değil, doğrudan yaşamını odağa aldım. Zaten kanser de onunla birlikte yaşıyor ve gelişiyordu.
Belgeselde hastalığın ve tedavilerin tıbbi tanımları, doktorlar, psikologlar yerine tamamen hasta bakışına odaklanıldı.
İnanıyorum ki elde ettiğimiz içerik sadece Türkiye değil, dünya genelinde de önceden yapılmamış bir yere erişti. Bir sene daha yaşayacağı belli olmayan bir hastanın rekor seviyedeki yaşamı ortaya kondu.
