The last night
“The last night” is Bea’s story, a woman in the midst of a personal crisis that is forced to leave the big city and move back to the country house where she was born, and where her brother and sister still live in abject poverty. Shaken by their living conditions and by her new rural reality, she nonetheless endeavors to fit in with the help of Emi, her meek but weird younger sister. Together they take care of the animals and plants of the small farmhouse, as their brother Franco works at a nearby breeding farm. When Bea invites them to change their lifestyle, she comes into direct conflict with Franco, who is slowly revealed to be quick-tempered and cruel. Bea discovers that her two siblings share the same ambiguous inclinations, and more than one secret. And she discovers that the most dangerous secret of all still lingers around them: in every word spoken, in the fields all around, in the foundations of the old house itself, and in their shared past.

Born in Modena in 1982, after some shorts selected by many independent film festival around the world, with the film “Tempo vivo Tempo morto”, a non budget self-production signed with Nicola Xella, he won the “Wild Card Italia” section at the Overlook Film Festival in Rome. In 2012, he creates, with other authors from Emilia Romagna, the Sisma Emilia collective, that in 2014 will create “Tellurica – Racconti dal cratere”, an episodic feature-length film on the tragedy of the recent earthquake. His contribution to the film is titled “Anniversario”, and stars Beatrice Schiros and Roberto Herlitzka. “The last night” is his new feature-length film.
I want every scene to be memorable, be it for a camera movement, an edit, an actor’s expression, a musical theme.
For this project I distanced myself from the long silences and gazes that were very much a feature of my other works in favor of a real reflection on the thriller genre, without scarifying my taste and my ideas. “The last night” must have a personality of its own. I don’t want to throw a brick at the spectator’s head; I want to punch him in the stomach.
I strongly felt I needed both tension and mise-en-scene, and that the one would have to complement the other. Aesthetics are fundamental to me, but trying to keep up the tension and the development of the character is and remains the most interesting challenge. This is why before shooting every scene I thought of how to provoke, shock and move the spectator.
