Fernanda Lamuño is a Mexican-born filmmaker with a passion for telling coming-of-age stories that have the themes of family, cultural identity and heritage at their core. Her short film "Caminos" won the Audience Award for The film-maker Project and secured national distribution with PBS. She took her vision and sense of humor to direct and edit "Carino" which won the Audience Award Best Short Film in 2022. She produced “Santastein” which is streaming as of Christmas 2023 on Screambox, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV+. Fernanda pours her heart and energy into her latest short film “Las Luces”, illuminating the screen with a passion that radiates through every frame.
“Las Luces” is a winding tale where the magic of Latin American lore intertwines with the captivating wonder of the Floridian wilderness. While creating “Las Luces”, my team and I found ourselves in the same challenging position as the characters in our story—confronting the vast unknown, unsure if we would emerge on the other side victorious.
As a Latin American filmmaker, I aimed to mirror the magical realism style reminiscent of South American folktales and legends, blurring the line between the real and unreal. Choosing the Florida Everglades as our canvas for “Las Luces” was a deliberate decision to elevate the enchanting spirit of this narrative style.
Surprisingly, what initially seemed to be our most significant challenge, shooting in 90-degree weather in pitch-black darkness, was actually our silver lining. It was in the quiet moments of untamed Everglades beauty (and relentless humidity) that we discovered that shared adversity is a universal force that binds us all together. As a result, a film shaped by personal loss gradually transformed into a collective journey of embracing and treasuring life's moments, both the good and the bad.
This film is not just our creation; it's a tribute to Yasser, a fellow producer, screenwriter, actor, storyteller, and friend, who passed away at the young age of 25. His spirit echoes in every frame of our heartfelt journey.
Thank you for considering joining us not just as a viewer but as a participant in this shared celebration of life and enduring spirit.
