Experiencing Interruptions?

Koselig (noun/verb)

“Koselig (noun/verb)” is a mockumentary comedy about Slow TV, a real-life Norwegian phenomenon that can best be described as “marathon television coverage of an ordinary event in its entirety”. At its heart, it is a simplistic yet endearing form of film that captivates foreign crowds for hours on end with its still imagery and unconventional charm. In 2011, it was the vehicle for a Norwegian film crew to set the longest live documentary record and, in 2020, it is primed to do so again.

A sleepless documentary crew follows Alecko Tufte, a Slow TV creator based in America, as he sets out on this record-breaking quest. With 134+ hours to burn, Alecko spends his time between shooting introducing his beloved craft to American audiences and talking to the crew about his trials, roots, and inspirations. The grueling hours begin to wear at the crew, but Alecko’s enthusiasm is unwavering. It is not his will that is questioned but that of the crew as they begin to realize neither party may have been as clear about their intentions with the documentary as they each originally thought.

Director Statement

It’s difficult to watch Slow TV for the first time and not laugh. Especially if, like me, you grew up on American cinema & television which often averages a cut every two seconds. In such stark contrast, Slow TV makes you feel like you’re sinking sluggishly into quicksand in comparison. Or that you’ve been tricked and you’re really just looking at a picture or a repeating gif. Or that you’re being experimented on to test the boundaries of humanity’s patience.

Yet the more you watch Slow TV, the more you are awakened to its endearing simplicity, and the more you start to see why those overseas have taken to its quirky charm. It is so opposite of our society here in America--one that is so intent on “the next”, on running and not crawling to things--making this medium that is so completely not rushing...astounding.

Though one of my goals in creating “Koselig” was to make people laugh, I also wanted to capture and share that sense of wonder Slow TV gave to me. I wanted to remind and re-glorify the outlook that we have seemed to have forgotten nowadays: that the only moment worth living for is the present. That the image right in front of us is worth looking at, and we shouldn’t be afraid, now and then, to just...stay.
