Samuel Karow is a video artist based in Wisconsin. He received his BFA from UW-Milwaukee's Department of Film. Specializing in experimental documentaries, Sam seeks to capture genuine moments of beauty, intimacy, and conflict. When given ample time for discovery, he finds that the ordinary becomes quite extraordinary. Sam's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His award-winning short film “3 Miles East” was included in the 64th Cannes Film Festival Court Metrage.
In my short film Cupcake I draw stylistic inspiration from Chris Marker's 1962 masterpiece La Jetée to explore the boundaries of beauty, intimacy, and desire through a unique narrative lens. Using black-and-white still images, paired with a carefully chosen soundtrack.
The film delves into subjects often viewed as taboo—feederism, belly kink, and shibari —with the intention of elevating these themes beyond the realm of shock or fetishization. By presenting them in an artistic, thoughtful context, I aim to celebrate beauty’s subjective form and challenge conventional perceptions of intimacy.
Through the juxtaposition of still imagery and a rhythmic flow, I invite the viewer to experience the intricate nuances of desire and human connection in a way that is both visceral and visually lush. Ultimately, my work seeks to transform the way we see beauty, inviting a deeper, more nuanced understanding of what it means to be vulnerable, empowered, and seen.
