Ilaw

Ilaw (Tagalog word for light) follows Gabe as he recounts the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Yue, as he sleeps. Not being the first time that he's had to recall memories of better times, Gabe has grown hostile towards these unwelcomed visits in his mind, but the warm and tender memories of her are able to make him drop his guard and open himself to answer the questions he's been too afraid to ask himself.

Director Biography - Erin Beleno

Erin Beleno is an artist, filmmaker, and illustrator who is currently studying at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. With over 5+ years of experience as an artist, he uses his practice to portray his experiences, inner turmoil, and memories in an array of art forms that aim to contextualize and address those feelings best. Although most of his work consists of digital art pieces and illustrations, he recently started delving into films, video creation, photography, and music composition. By combining aspects of his creative practice with his various hobbies and interests, Erin aims to accentuate and enhance the emotional responses to his art work.

By portraying the experiences that are more universally shared like mental illness and heartbreak somewhat directly, Erin is able to make his work out to be relatable despite its deeply personal subject matter. For aspects of his work that do touch upon his more individual experiences, such as with his struggles with depression and anxiety, his depiction of the topics leans more towards the abstract; often portraying those matters to appear as intense and confusing as they had once been. With this in mind, Erin hopes to answer the various questions that he has for himself and hopes that other people can learn from his experiences to be able to answer any questions they may be struggling with. Ultimately, he uses his practice as a form of catharsis.

Director Statement

Based on a dream I had one night, Ilaw is meant to reflect the emotional responses I had after reliving the warmth and familiarity for a brief moment as I slept. After waking up, I was instantly reminded of how cold and lonely reality is. Writing it down afterwards, I left the recollection of the dream as just a journal entry, but developed the idea further.

Ilaw tells the story of a young man who is living in a liminal space; being too caught up by the past, but subconsciously beginning to move on. Gabe’s struggles with properly coping with the thoughts he is left alone with have led him to try to disregard and forget about his feelings completely. Ultimately, it is those memories that he tries to push away that makes him look further within and the memory of Yue helps him see the light again.
