Raised with mixed heritage by his mother and sister in Bournemouth on the South Coast of England, Mikel has forever been instilled with a lust for culture and creativity.
As a teenager, Mikel won funding to set up a youth theatre company in his area winning him an entrepreneurial award from the local council. Learning his mother's native tongue, Mikel has found work in the NGO sector in Latin America, spending a cumulative two years on the road in the continent working with grassroots developing communities.
In his graduating year at the Northern Film School in Leeds, three of Mikel's short films were nominated for national awards by the NFTS, Frightfest and BFI.
Utilising his communication skills, Mikel has been invited to be an educator for institutions such as the BFI, National Youth Theatre, Into Film and was recently welcomed by the Kaunas Romuva Cinema Centre in Lithuania to lead their filmmaking summer camp.
Mikel has always had a rapacious desire for learning and since the age of sixteen his primary focus has been developing as a filmmaker, whether by absorbing the trail as a backpacker and tour guide, treading the boards as an actor for the NYT or writing call sheets and leading the set as First Assistant to directors such as Tom Paton, Simeon Halligan or Steve McCarten. Mikel is known for his tenacity and fearlessness through the filmmaking process, throwing himself into new roles and having the resources to overcome any situation thrown at him.
Most recently has seen Mikel begin his first solo producing work with his short film Mausoleum, starring Julia Deakin and written and directed by Jamie Milligan, selected by Women Over 50 Film Festival, Aesthetica Short Film Festival, Short Sound Film Festival, London Short Film Festival and InShort Film Festival so far. His commercial and music video work has seen him producing for clients including Nike, Crypt TV, Lyves, Elles, Adobe and more.
People assume that the seaside is a sanctuary. Growing up in Bournemouth, I've found that every town, village or settlement hides an underbelly.
Since I was born, my family home has always been situated on a road which is unfortunately known for prostitution. The causes and effects of "the world's oldest profession" have troubled me from a young age, too young to have known what it all meant probably. As a result, I've always been a fierce advocate for gender equality and fought hard to combat sexual discrimination and harassment in every aspect of my life and the world around me. With the global population at a boiling point on the issue, I felt moved to detail some of my own perspective in the form of a script. Speaking to others, I've found that my insight as a male on the periphery of this environment, can afford some insight. The horrors of this world naturally inclined me to imbue my work with a relish for the genre and so I began to research in order to remain sensitive to a troubling topic. It was through my research that I discovered a link between my hometown and a relatively unknown historic case of sexual abuse committed by a very well-known public figure. Through this script, I have re-contextualised the real words and voices from the sex trade as I have witnessed in written interviews, documentaries and on my doorstep.
Working with American actress Lauren Ashley Carter, Hail Maria! initially began life as a character test. Considering the quality of the rushes, I worked with producer and editor Laura Johnson to create an experimental monologue which harnesses Lauren's powerful performance along with Martyna Knitter's stunning otherworldly photography to create a piece which will draw attention to the tragedy of Harriet Westbrook's short life.
