ahmed al noor (b. 1996) was born in Sudan and is based on Treaty 1 Territory (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). He has written, directed, and produced many works independently, as well as in collaboration with the Black Film Collective. His work is grounded in challenging and expanding the perceptions of Black artists, from his experiences in Sudan to the West. His debut short film, stole youth (2024), has been screened in Manitoba, Alberta, and British Colombia, winning both the Audience Choice award and Best Cinematography at UWPG Film Fest 2024. "go girl." is his second film.
"go girl." is the embodiment of my childhood experience as a young refugee who was quickly in a position serving as a translator for my mother before I had even started kindergarten. The normalization of that life had left me thinking I was so much older than I was, and this story serves as the journey of finding space to have joy in the pursuit of my craft. Through the lens of this girl who is far more capable and responsible than she should have to be, I aim to share my own trials as an immigrant child, growing up far away from my heritage and culture, yet still finding solace in my family. The relationship portrayed in the film is directly inspired by the type of guidance I was able to receive from my mother that allowed me to grow into the artist I am now. Having the roles inversed narratively represents my maturation to recognize all the love that shaped me and pay it forward it to a child version of my mother.
