Director Biography

Emily Ong Shuyi is a Malaysian filmmaker and creative practitioner invested in the multiplicity and transformation of identity during a time of intense environmental shift. They are 1/2 of 3rdSpace, a creative collective built on the foundation of decolonisation and community practice. Emily’s directorial debut 'Abantu—同人' (2022) has been officially selected for Aesthetica Short Film Festival 2023 while their latest film 'My Sister is a Butterfly' (2024) is newly released.

Director Statement

FUNERAL was made during a solo visit to Singapore a year or so after my uncle's death. Shot impromptu on a laptop camera and written on a street corner, the film is my own ritual carried out to honour his memory.
