Private Project

FOUND OBJECT

Phil Pilgrim, outsider artist, visits the Chapel Delancey Gallery.
Margot Van Rijn, the gallery owner, and Gertie Fux, art advisor, both wanting to get Phil to sign a deal to sell his estate, do their best to humor him while baldly discussing their own ambition and plans for his art after he's out of the picture.

Phil gets wasted and attracts the attention of Madeleine, ersatz
communist and gallery assistant. When Phil tries to steal a sculpture, Madeleine has to decide where her sympathies truly are.

Director Biography - Ethan Mantel, Matt Mantel

Hailing from Los Angeles, Ethan and Matt Mantel are a sibling duo pursuing careers in the fields of film, television directing, and animation, with a shared passion for story-driven comedies with a healthy dose of absurdity. Utilizing their distinct skills and backgrounds, the Mantel brothers have collaborated on multiple projects, including festival-selected short films "PERU" and "MOM's DINNER."

Ethan's journey in filmmaking started with internships at various indie film production offices between Los Angeles and New York City and a degree in Film and Media at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Over the past fifteen years, he has pursued his passion for producing, writing, and directing via various avenues, including through sketch writing classes at Upright Citizens Brigade and producing his first short film “PERU”. To complement his passion for working with creative folks, Ethan currently works in marketing with digital creators at an education start-up.

Matt, a graduate of the animation program at Savannah College of Art and Design, currently works as a storyboard artist for The Simpsons. He is heavily involved in stand-up comedy across Los Angeles and improv at the Groundlings Theatre. Presently, Matt is editing his first feature film, a low-budget exploration of the internal dialogue surrounding the creation of art.

Together, Ethan and Matt have co-directed their most recent project, "FOUND OBJECT." As they continue to develop their unique blend of storytelling and comedy, the Mantel siblings strive to make a lasting and unique impact on the world of film and entertainment through dedicated service to the story of every project they work on with a healthy dose of self-effacement and levity.

Director Statement

Coming off of “MOM’S DINNER”, we were looking for a next project, something that could build on our directing partnership that was challenging yet not quite as involved as the 15-minute, 5-day shoot in Vermont that “MD” required. After Peter Stewart shared his script “FOUND OBJECT” with Ethan after a serendipitous meeting at a wedding, it was quickly clear that we had found that next project. Noting the esoteric and Shakespearian qualities of Peter’s dialogue, combined with a big helping of irreverence towards a high art world that Peter saw from the inside via his work as a manufacturer for a modern art sculptor, we thought it would make for a fun and interesting challenge and a good next step for our creative journey. We also saw an opportunity to work with our father, Michael Mantell, who played the role of Phil Pilgrim; like Phil, our dad had been a visual artist focusing on abstract expressionism since the 70’s, and, helpfully for this project, a theater, film, TV, and commercial actor. He and the other actors (Julia Joyce-Barry, Erin Neufer, and Susannah Hoffman) all brought a theatrical humor to the film, and thanks to the work of cinematographer Junting Zhou and his crew, plus the psych wall and lounge area graciously donated by NYCAP 3D in the Brooklyn Navy Yards, they had a surreal, other-worldly backdrop to play in that mimics the detached shallowness that can embody modern art galleries. We hope you enjoy it.
