Eva Aisya Purnadia is a documentary filmmaker based in Surakarta, Indonesia, who received her bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Film and Television, Institut Kesenian Jakarta in 2023. During her studies, Eva majored in documentary film and began her work by researching, writing, and making short documentaries related to religious topics. Esa (2023) is her third short documentary that raises issues about race and religion. Growing up in a diverse environment but experiencing a crisis of tolerance is the irony that inspired Eva to find the idea for her film.
Indonesia is known as a religious pluralistic country, upholding the Pancasila ideology where the first principle states "Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa” (“Belief in the One and Only God”). Esa is a Sanskrit word which means "the only one" and refers to the idea of absolute existence. Instead of talking about God, this documentary actually wants to talk about humans. Humans that have diverse beliefs about their faith. The diversity that should unite, not disintegrate. Because in the end all humans are the same, equal, and one. However, in reality we still find a lot of injustice and discrimination against religious adherents, especially those considered minorities. Their rights to worship are taken away and marginalized, as if the religion they adhere to is not important. Through this documentary, we can see how beautiful harmony can actually be created if we do not interfere with each other and can accept each other’s differences.
