Animex Screen Student Film Festival - 2024

CALL FOR ENTRIES! - Entry deadline: Friday 31st May 2024.

Animex Screen is an international competition for animation and VFX students and invites entries in any style, genre and technique of animation. Animex Screen is part of Teesside University's Animex International Festival of Animation, VFX and Games which runs from the 11th - 15th November, 2024.

Winners of the Animex Screen competition will be announced on the 11th November 2024 and shown at a dedicated screening at the Awards night. Selected films will be shown alongside the talks and events of the main Animex Festival and some at selected venues leading up to the awards night.

Animex Screen recognises the best short film in each competition category and will be judged by animation professionals. Selected films will receive laurels and the winners will receive a small prize.

- Undergraduate - CG Animation
- Undergraduate - VFX
- Undergraduate - 2D Animation
- Undergraduate - Stop-Motion Animation
- Post-Graduate - Animation and VFX.
- Special Category* - Any type of Animation

PLEASE DO NOT ENTER YOUR FILM INTO MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY!
Undergraduate films are films made as part of a BA (Bachelors) Degree programme.
Postgraduate films are films made as part of a Masters or PHD programme.
*The Special category is exclusively for youth groups and hobbyists under 18 years of age and outside of education as well as projects made by school groups. This category is NOT for professional animators or graduate students.

If your film is selected for screening, then you will be notified by email and once more if it wins.

ELIGIBILITY
Animex Screen is open to animations by students ONLY, BA (bachelors) level students, postgraduate students, MA, Msc Marts and PHD level students and hobbyists and youth groups who are under 18 years of age.

College students, A-level students and BA students should enter their films to an Undergraduate category.

Masters level and PhD students should enter their films to the Post-Graduate category.

If you are under 18 and made your film at a youth group, at home with friends or family members, or as part of a school project please enter the Special Category.

Please make clear which category you wish to be entered into, entrants can be from any country.

Submission can be made by the student or by the animation school or youth group leader/hobbyist.

SELECTION
Films that are selected will be competing for Animex Screen, 2024 and will be screened in front of an audience.

Work in any category should be a self-contained short animation. Eligible maximum running time is up to 10 minutes duration.

Films must be made after the 1st of September 2022

You can submit up to 10 individual films maximum, per submitter, in the competition.

Animations must be submitted individually and not within a compilation video.

Animex Screen 2024 only accepts submissions via FilmFreeway.

Please follow the ‘Technical Requirements’ guidelines below for the online submission of digital video files. All digital video files are carefully checked and processed before screening. If your film is selected, we must be able to screen your best quality video online at full HD.

For each entry, please ensure that the entry information requested on FilmFreeway about your film is complete and correct including production stills of the animation. It is also important to include the name of your school, college or university and the year when you made the film.

The film title, specifications, credits, synopsis, stills could be used in print and on the web if your film is selected. Animex Screen reserves the right to edit synopsis text. Short excerpt clips or trailers may be used for publicity purposes by Animex Festival, Teesside University and associated sponsors to promote your work and the work of the festival. Supporting stills may be used for publicity purposes for the Animex Festival, Teesside University and associated sponsors.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Animex only accepts digital video files for preview submitted to FilmFreeway.

The preferred file formats are .mov or .mp4 using the compression codecs ProRes 422 or H.264.
The preferred resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels or 1080 x 720 pixels.
When you add the online screener please choose the option ‘Upload’.
Upload of a high-quality digital video file is preferred, it is recommended that you upload the best resolution version, if possible.
You can upload a high-quality HD video file up to 10GB.
This means that the selection panel and judges will be able to view the animation at the best quality to make the selections and awards.
If you are providing a lower resolution version of your video, we will ask you for a high-quality screening copy, if your film is selected.

Please note: you should also enable download when your digital video file, otherwise we MAY request a download. When you enable download, only the festival can download your animation for festival previewing, selection and judging purposes.
Enabling download to your film helps the festival process and is more efficient for our selections.

Alternatively, you may prefer to add the online screener as a Vimeo link, please add a password but PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE PASSWORD when you submit.

Also please note: if your online screener on Vimeo is password-protected, you should also enable download if possible. When you enable download, only the festival can download your animation for festival previewing, selection and judging purposes. Enabling download to your film helps the festival process and is more efficient for our selections.

JUDGING AND AWARDS
Animex reserves the right to make the final selection, curatorial decisions and invite animations.

Each competition category will be judged by academic and animation professionals.

The criteria of the awards categories are stated in the drop-down section when you select a category to enter your film to.

All selected animations will be screened in the Animex Awards online screenings:

If your film is selected, you agree to allow Animex to screen your film online to UK viewers between 11th - 15th November. Award-winning films will also be screened on at the award ceremony during that time.

GENERAL PROVISION
By submitting the work, the entrant accepts the Rules & Terms and affirms that they have authority to enter the film and that no third party copyright has been infringed. If the film is selected for screening, the entrant consents to the use of the animation for the purpose of Animex screenings online and associated with the Animex Festival between 11th - 15th November and, if the film is awarded, to also screen online in a winners reel on between ?11th - 15th November 2024.
