Set and Industrial designer Martina Dimitrova (1989) lives and works in Berlin. She studied Industrial Design at University of the Arts Berlin and deepend her knowledge in Spatial and Production Design during her following studies at the Filmuniversity Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. During those years she fell in love with the visual language and lively and yet sometimes uncomfortable spirit of Memphis Milano and Ettore Sottsass works. In the end all this attention she invested leads to her final project EVA NON PIACE.
The short film is telling the story of EVA - a celebrity living in Italy in the early 80s and a character I am working on since almost 3 years. The short bundles all of my works affiliated to this type of design. Furniture, Costume, Characters, Graphic and last but not least a whole outside movie set is based on postmodern principles and on an eclectic and liberal way of designing. An hommage to the infamous Ettore Sottsass, Robert Venturi, Matteo Thun and so many more. What if this group of postmodern designers and architects had an more popular influence on our daily lives? How would our society and surrounding look like?
Adapting the well-known Memphis philosophy not just on the set and interior of the film Eva Non Piace, but also on the fashion styling of our cast, as well as bringing various artist together for the project I am trying to give an possible answer to that particular question.
Thanks to the contributions of graphic artist Camille Walala and Japanese illustrator Yoko Honda an even more extended view on postmodernism and the 80s spirit is being created and brings the entirety into the concept of infamous EVA.
Let's dive into a world of postmodern kitsch in an unknown time and place and may our stiff and serious world be liberated by stylistic freedom and acceptance for all kinds of derailments.
