Director Biography - Joshua Butler

JOSHUA BUTLER is an award-winning independent filmmaker and one of the most prolific television directors of his generation. Joshua graduated Summa Cum Laude from USC’s prestigious film school, having written and directed his widely acclaimed Senior Thesis short WILL WORK FOR FOOD. By 2003 he had directed 3 series for USA Network/SyFy Channel and 4 feature-length films: BEER MONEY written by Rich Wilkes (xXx); PRANCER RETURNS produced by Raffaella De Laurentiis (winning 12 awards including Best Family Movie at the Young Artist Awards); SAINT SINNER written and produced by Clive Barker (nominated for an International Horror Guild award); and DEATHLANDS, which was both directed and executive-produced by Joshua with his former production company Kinetic Pictures. At his current company Iceblink Films, Joshua has produced original movies for SyFy Channel, ESPN and MTV, the 2016 award-winning documentary CARE, 2017 horror feature EVEN LAMBS HAVE TEETH, and numerous short films and music videos. As writer-director, Joshua created the cult classic VLOG for Twisted Pictures and the producers of SAW, which premiered at the Hollywood Film Festival, went on to play 21 festivals winning numerous awards, and was released on Halloween 2011 by Anchor Bay Entertainment. In television, Joshua has directed multiple episodes of the CW shows THE ORIGINALS, THE SECRET CIRCLE, RINGER and NIKITA, as well as TWISTED, RAVENSWOOD and the social media sensation PRETTY LITTLE LIARS for Disney/Freeform. He also directed CRISIS for NBC, RECKLESS for CBS, 5 episodes of FOX's THE FOLLOWING starring Kevin Bacon, MATADOR for Robert Rodriguez and the El Rey Network, Joe Carnahan's NBC thriller STATE OF AFFAIRS starring Katherine Heigl, the award-winning Scenarios USA short film HOUSE NOT HOME for Showtime, 11 episodes of the hit CW show THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, and Kurtzman/Orci’s CBS show LIMITLESS produced by and starring Bradley Cooper. In addition to his film and television work, Joshua is a sought-after music video director, whose works include Ryan Star’s epic “Bullet”, Levi Kreis’ intimate “I Should Go” and MENEW’s lyrical “Baby You’re Like A Drug”, starring Joshua Jackson. Most recently, Joshua has directed multiple episodes of popular series SyFy Channel's THE MAGICIANS and Disney/Freeform’s SHADOWHUNTERS: THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS, as well as the short film DOGHOUSE starring Michael Maize and Erin Daniels which was short-listed for Oscar consideration, won Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Victoria Texas Independent Film Festival and was named Best Short Film at ITVFest 2017. He is currently working hard on writing and directing a feature film. Joshua was profiled by MTV News, Emmy Magazine, Wetpaint, Parade and ExtraTV, and was named a Shorty Awards finalist as "Best Director in Social Media".
