“Domicilium,” located in the village of Weyarn amidst idyllic natural surroundings, serves as the setting for three intertwined life transitions: In a house that functions as both a meditation retreat and a hospice, spiritual seeking and the imminent end of life converge. Like a butterfly, the main character - a hospice guest - undergoes profound transformations leading up to physical death. At the same time, visitors are on site, seeking clarity and awakening through silence, breath-work, and meditation.

The documentary also follows Zen teacher Migaku Sato and contemporary spiritual teacher Louise Kay, whose approaches could hardly be more different. While Sato is rooted in the centuries-old discipline of Zen - with rituals, silence, and clear forms - Louise Kay advocates a modern, direct spirituality without fixed institutions or religious rules. Both speak of presence, identity, and the end of clinging, and in doing so are repeatedly surrounded by the reality of dying, which puts every theory to the test.
In parallel, the film tells the story of Helena Snela and her son Sebastian, who took over the leadership of Domicilium many years ago. Caught between familial bonds, expectations, and old conflicts, mother and son find themselves in a struggle over control, fear of change, and the question of how to pass on something that has become part of one’s own identity.

Through this compelling interweaving of themes, “Domicilium - The Journey of a Butterfly” paints a multifaceted portrait of spiritual quest, the passing down of family traditions, and the act of dying itself. The film follows people in moments when familiar certainties fade away - and asks what remains when roles, possessions, certainties, or even one’s own life can no longer be held onto.

Das „Domicilium“ im Ort Weyarn, inmitten paradiesischer Natur, ist Schauplatz dreier miteinander verwobener Lebensübergänge: In einem Haus, das zugleich Meditationsretreat und Hospiz ist, treffen spirituelle Suche und das unmittelbare Ende des Lebens aufeinander. Wie ein Schmetterling durchläuft die Hauptfigur - ein Hospizgast - tiefgreifende Wandlungen bis hin zum körperlichen Tod. Gleichzeitig sind Besucher vor Ort, die in Stille, Atemarbeit und Meditation nach Klarheit und Erwachen suchen.

Der Dokumentarfilm begleitet weiterhin den Zen-Lehrer Migaku Sato und die zeitgenössische spirituelle Lehrerin Louise Kay, deren Zugänge kaum unterschiedlicher sein könnten. Während Sato in der jahrhundertealten Disziplin des Zen verwurzelt ist - mit Ritualen, Stille und klaren Formen - vertritt Louise Kay eine moderne, unmittelbare Spiritualität ohne feste Institutionen oder religiöse Regeln. Beide sprechen über Präsenz, Identität und das Ende des Festhaltens und werden dabei immer wieder von der Realität des Sterbens umgeben, die jede Theorie auf die Probe stellt.
Parallel erzählt der Film von Helena Snela und ihrem Sohn Sebastian, der die Leitung des Domicilium vor vielen Jahren übernommen hat. Zwischen familiärer Verbundenheit, Erwartungen und alten Konflikten befinden sich Mutter und Sohn in einem Prozess um Kontrolle, Angst vor Veränderung und die Frage, wie man etwas weitergibt, das Teil der eigenen Identität geworden ist.

„Domicilium - Die Reise eines Schmetterlings“ erzählt durch diese spannende Verflechtung ein vielschichtiges Portrait über spirituelle Suche, familiäre Weitergabe und das Sterben selbst. The experience of being able to accompany a person with a camera during their final days was not only an ethical responsibility for us, but also a deeply moving emotional journey. The conversations we were able to have during these moments carried a depth and authenticity that one feels when a life is drawing to a close. Only the essentials remain - love, fear, gratitude, regret, and hope.

The film avoids both wellness-style spirituality and pure heaviness. It anchors all events in the concrete reality of the hospice and the meditation center. Through the guidance of Zen Master Migaku Sato and spiritual teacher Louise Kay on-site during a retreat, spaces of beauty and human connection open up. People come to Domicilium not only to die - but also because they have experienced a crisis in their lives and sense that there is something deeper out there with which they have not yet come into contact.

The loss of a beloved friend, the agonising moments during an illness, or inner struggles that confront us with the darkness of our emotions - all of these are trials that can push us to our limits. Yet it is precisely in this suffering that a hidden strength lies. The film does not end with an answer, but with an experience of continuity - life goes on - differently. Perhaps maturity consists not only in being able to let go, but in recognising that nothing remains anyway. If we take these insights with us into our lives - how would we shape them? What would then be truly important to us, and what would be meaningless?

Die Erfahrung, einen Menschen in seinen letzten Tagen mit der Kamera begleiten zu dürfen, war für uns nicht nur eine ethische Verantwortung, sondern eine zutiefst bewegende emotionale Reise. Die Gespräche, die wir in diesen Momenten führen durften, trugen eine Tiefe und Echtheit in sich, wie man sie spürt, wenn ein Leben sich seinem Ende zuneigt. Nur noch das Wesentliche bleibt - Liebe, Angst, Dankbarkeit, Reue und Hoffnung.

Der Film vermeidet sowohl Wellness-Spiritualität als auch reine Schwere. Er verankert alle Ereignisse in der konkreten Realität des Hospizes und des Meditationszentrum. Durch die Begleitung des Zen Meister Migaku Sato und der spirituellen Lehrerin Louise Kay vor Ort bei einem Retreat eröffnen sich Räume von Schönheit und menschlicher Verbundenheit. Menschen kommen ins Domicilium nicht nur zum sterben - auch weil sie in ihrem Leben eine Krise erfahren haben und spüren, das es da etwas tieferes gibt, mit dem sie noch nicht in Berührung gekommen sind.
