Robert Webb creates a diverse range of alternative music along with trippy music videos to match. A programmer by trade, he also writes software to create psychedelic effects in his videos, thus bringing together several big interests: music, film and software.
Robert previously made short Super 8 films. He entered the White Gloves Film Festival six times between 1996 and 2000, where film-makers had 48 hours to shoot their film, shot in sequence, and unseen even by the film-maker until the festival. All six made it into their best-of screenings. He was also accepted into the Metro Super 8 Film Festival in 1997.
Rob moved onto other projects, but returned to making music around 2018, which soon led him back to film-making in the form of music videos.
My previous three music videos each focused on and explored a single effect. This time I wanted to combine all these effects, as well as making a video with a more narrative structure, and the video for Deviate was the result.
It follows a hapless business man who gets sucked into a mysterious box. It was a metaphor for facing that part of yourself that you'd rather not face, or exploring paths untravelled. Questioning oneself rather than staying on the conveyor belt. It matches the message of the lyrics pretty closely, while still being ambiguous enough for multiple interpretations.
Aside from music, film, and programming, I'm also interested in papercraft, and made the mystical box seen in the video to represent the unknown. I had fishing line attached to open and close it remotely and a flashing LED light inside. I used my Voronoi effect from my Thought Bubble video to add an other-worldly bubbling effect to the light. My kaleidoscope effect from Treat can be seen in the spiralling background. I had to add some more features to the software for use here. And my slit-scan effect from Somewhere Always is also used in a few places, most notably the car-bending. This software also required some additional features to achieve what I wanted.
Editing was a big job, but I'm very happy with the final video. Hope you are too!
