Russell (writer/director) is a filmmaker from Virginia obsessed with sliding doors and toxic relationships (in movies!). His latest short film RETURN TO SENDER was an official selection of 30 film festivals, including Fantastic Fest, Flickers' RIFF and the opening night of HollyShorts. He is directing a feature adaptation to be produced by Jamie Lee Curtis and Molly Hallam (THE MUSTANG). He is the writer of the upcoming Blumhouse feature MOTHER NATURE, based on his graphic novel published by Titan Comics in August. CLOSING TIME is his seventh short film.
I've had this surreal feeling in my late 20s that there is now a track record of my decisions as an adult: a series of fuck-ups, successes and choices that led to everything I have today. In my worst moments I become intoxicated by the past, wishing to go back to a moment when life seemed simpler… when there was limitless potential of what the world could be, or who I could be. I start fixating on friendships or opportunities that fell apart, wondering about the other realities where my path took a different turn. This dark train of thought is what compels Trent to stage a hellish reunion for his former BFFs in CLOSING TIME, an embarrassingly personal and anxious film.
This short can be cross-listed with a dozen different genres— sci-fi, indie drama, romance, thriller, dark comedy—but always touches upon universal chords of regret and longing. There are not many stories that speak to the kind of self-reflection people in their late 20s experience with dread. My generation is afraid to have kids because it’s hard to imagine a reality where our world's best days are not behind us. So I know there’s an audience for a story about anxiously fixating on the past, especially in the form of a mysterious, emotional, slow-burn thriller. And few songs feel more binding to memory than Semisonic's, which we were grateful to secure all rights to use as the anchor to this film.
Trent knows exactly where he is taking his old friends tonight - but we only find out with everyone else. Thank you for coming along for the journey.
