death will come like a shadow
Death will come like a shadow(2min) is part of Saba Hasan’s most recent self portrait series (2021)comprising photographs and videos in which as a response to the social isolation related to the pandemic she turns the camera on the moct constant subject her self. Hasan’s camera handling in this video is characteristically long single pans which she utilises to hold our undisturbed focus and draw us into the spell of what it is that she wants to reveal. A solitary experience of passing of time enters into the frame created with painterly textures created by overlapping images, sounds and play of light. This sense of quiet intimacy is heightened by the artists gaze and her voice reading the titular poem giving the otherwise minimalist video added intensity and depth.
