JUDGING PROCESS
Submissions will be judged and scored based on criteria including: quality of screenplay (story, dialogue, character arcs etc), acting, production quality, originality, technical proficiency, cinematography, sound design, editing, location/s used and set design. We support indie filmmaking and will award additional points to shorts produced on a micro budget and/or minimal crew.

SCREENING FOR SELECTED SHORTS
Your selection and award classification will be posted on our website. Canada Shorts works hard to recognize quality filmmaking and tends to offer awards to 100+ short films per season. That is considerably more than we could possibly screen. What we can and do screen are all 'Premier' Award winners including 'Best Of' winners.

SCREENING LOCATION
Canada Shorts will screen all 'Premier Award' winners including 'Best Of' winners.

Canada Shorts is held at the the elegant Mary Oland Theatre of the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John, New Brunswick (Canada).

EXHIBITION FORMAT
If your short is selected for exhibition we will inform you. We will also send you an exhibition file request email. You will need to provide an HD (1920 x 1080) exhibition file.

IMDB
Canada Shorts is an IMDB qualifying festival.

COMMUNICATIONS
Canada Shorts communicates to entrants via FilmFreeway notifications. Please make certain the email address in your entry form is correct. Please also add admin@canadashorts.com to your Safe Senders list on your email platform.

Some email systems place FilmFreeway communications in junk/spam folders so we recommend you check those folders regularly and mark FilmFreeway comms as safe.

The festival basically gives out an award to every film, which undercuts the point of the "achievement. " The festival also only screens a small number of films from those selected to be apart of the festival. There is a slightly "off" vibe with this festival.

    Response from festival:

We are sorry you feel that way. Your film 'In Colors' was very highly rated by our selection committee but just fell short of being a Finalist. We could, like most traditional festivals, have sent all non-screening films a 'rejected'/'not accepted' notification but we feel strongly that that model is unfair. As per our T&C’s (which are made clear), we “award quality shorts regardless of their budget. We want to ensure indie filmmakers have the opportunity for festival success.”. Hence although 'In Colors' did not screen at Canada Shorts, it received an award (Award of Distinction) which you can quote on your resume, IMDB etc. It is our way of trying to help filmmakers and recognize quality filmmaking. If your film was not rated highly by our selection committee, it would not have received an award. Our T&C’s make it clear that we screen Best Of/Premier Award winners only, which we do. Canada Shorts 2019 screened 14 outstanding Best Of/Premier Award winning shorts, in two sessions, on Dec 14 in the Mary Oland Theatre of the New Brunswick Museum, the festival was well attended and the audience very much enjoyed the shorts. We are sorry we could not screen your short, but the programming team had a particularly challenging time and some excellent shorts unfortunately did not make the cut.

Thank you for the expediant response and communication and the honour of receiving the Merit Award for A Cradle Falls. It pushes us onward into new horizons.
I can't wait to submit our next round of films and attend the festival next year!
