Breeding Grounds

Breeding Grounds is a short film and transmedia project about a trio of World War III survivors who trade their procreative services for a chance at a new life in a safe haven. The film chronicles their first 80 days at Eastern Reach, a former government facility that evolved into a thriving community devoted to repopulating America. In a world with few people and very few men, Doctor Aubrey Mullins leads the community by imposing a new social order predicated on people joining a triple relationship—“two women, one man, and all the children you can bear”—as Sister Aubrey says in the community propaganda. Members who fail to produce are returned to the savage circumstances outside the walls of Eastern Reach.

Director Statement

I’ve always been interested in science fiction especially dystopian futures that present a specific stress on the human condition that forces behavior out of the norm. This is especially poignant if the stress relates to something that could or is starting to happen in current society. To take that stress and determine many of the ramifications helps to identify the core aspects of what makes us human.

In Breeding Grounds we explore some aspects of what might happen after a devastating war that has decimated the male population relative to females and how society as it exists deals with the core human desire of reproduction to repopulate itself. As today’s traditional family structures are being challenged we explore the ramifications when breeding is the primary driver of society.
