Laura Amelia Guzmán (Dominican Republic, 1980) has co-created 7 features during the last 17 years alongside her husband, Mexican filmmaker Israel Cárdenas, jointly producing, writing and directing documentaries and fictions that present a careful look at the social contexts that surround them. Their work has been presented at festivals such as Berlinale, Toronto, Venice, Rotterdam, among others. La Hembrita, her first feature as sole director, had its world premiere at IFFRotterdam in January 2023.
I find that my work is threaded by a profound interest in relationships and people finding a sense of belonging.
Lately, I’ve been exploring the social, moral and personal dimensions that shape contemporary Dominican society. In La Hembrita, through three admirable women, I’m navigating emotional–moral conflicts that arise when class divides give way to matters of conscience and responsibility.
