about SAMANTHA ; Sexuality, Queerism, and SAMAZINE ZINE
"About SAMANTHA" is a compelling short documentary that delves into the taboo subject of sexuality with audiences in South Korea, where societal norms still shroud discussions on sexualities and gender diversity. Despite the country's reluctance to embrace Pride parades and recognize gay marriage, a beacon of hope constantly emerges through creative artists, including Samantha-Sungeun Kim, the director of SAMANTHA ZINE.
SAMANTHA ZINE, an independent visual magazine, seeks to challenge the dominant narratives of sexuality ingrained in capitalism and patriarchy. Through art and literature, it aims to foster discussions on sexuality, presenting queer perspectives that transcend traditional heteronormative viewpoints.
The documentary unfolds against a book talk show, "About SAMANTHA," held in Seoul on September 20th, 2023. Hosted by SAMANTHA ZINE, the event provides a safe space for everyone to openly discuss sexuality, gender, queerism, and the creative process behind the magazine.
Through intimate conversations, the film explores what sexuality is and how society has historically framed women's sexuality. It also shares the personal journey of Samantha, who transitioned from cisgender women to transgender non-binary, and offers a unique perspective on gender exploration as a queer person. The film ended with delving into the creative process of zine-making and how this process intertwines with the personalization of SAMANTHA ZINE for audiences.
As Samantha-Sungeun Kim shares their stories, the documentary reflects on the magazine's impact, shedding light on how it empowers audiences to embark on their journeys of self-discovery, acceptance, and creative process. "About SAMANTHA" challenges viewers to confront societal taboos surrounding sexuality and encourages them to embrace diverse expressions of identity.

The creator of SAMANTHA ZINE, based in Brooklyn and working as a creative director, curator, and former fashion stylist, began exploring sexuality upon moving to New York in 2014 from South Korea. Using fashion styling as a medium, they intricately express the nuances of women and queer sexuality and body. Although SAMANTHA ZINE initially focused on women's identity, the creator's personal exploration of art led to the profound realization of a non-binary identity. They are now dedicated to showcasing the diversity of queer sexuality through the evolving pages of the publication. Currently, their work is expanding to take a holistic approach for queer individuals, with a specific emphasis on healing from racial and patriarchal wounds.
