ZEITGEISTER

The documentary film by Angela Zumpe - with photographs by Jan Sobottka - takes us back to the 1970s in West Berlin. Zumpe met her fellow students and professors from the former Hochschule der Künste and asked: WHAT HAPPENED TO US?
Influenced by the artistic environment of the Critical Realists, to which their professors Hajo Diehl and Wolfgang Petrick belong, they found different paths for their artistic work during this highly politicized period. Until today. In the film, Angela Zumpe build a bridge to the students of today. Are their dreams different? Are they better prepared for life as an artist?

Director Biography - Angela Zumpe

Filmemacherin, Medienkünstlerin
Arbeit an der Schnittelle zwischen Film und Kunst: essayistische Dokumentarfilme, sowie Multiscreen-Installationen, experimentelle Kurzfilme.
Studium UdK (damals Hochschule der Künste Berlin), DAAD Stipendium für Filmstudium an der NYU Tisch School New York. 1991 Spezialisierung auf digitale Bildbearbeitung, u. a. TV-Designerin (Entwicklung des News-Designs für n-tv). Experimentelle Kurzfilme u. a. bei Videokunst Multimedia in West-Berlin, div. Festivals.
Förderungen: BBK, Mitteldeutschen Medienförderung MDM für den dokumentarisch-biografischen Film Transit 2010, BKM für den Essayfilm »Pfarrers Kinder, Punks, Politiker und Philosophen« 2017.
Div. Video-Installationen in Koop mit der Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau, Akzente Duisburg.
2019: 12 Screen Videoinstallation THINGS TO COME - Lászlo, Lucia und Sibyl Moholy-Nagy im Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle, New Director Filmfest N.Y. 2020. 1998-2019 Professorin für Audiovisuelle Medien am FB Design der HS Anhalt, Kuratorin des Studentenfilmfestivals »schnongs« 2012 / 2014 am Bauhaus Dessau.

Director Statement

An Kunst scheiden sich die Geister. Werturteile sind schnell gefällt. Ein Maler wird als großes Talent gehandelt oder als völlig überschätzt dargestellt – was nicht selten dazu führt, dass er zwischen den Extremen pendelt. Ein Künstlerleben bietet gleichermaßen Raum für Hype und Havarie. Ebenso bietet es Platz für Alltägliches.
