Honorable Mention
Since the age of 5, Timothy Barker Jr has been in love with filmmaking. Coming from Atlanta, GA, Timothy spent his time as a child shooting home movies for his family. While in High School, he worked on the morning announcements, senior music video, and other projects. At the age of 18, Timothy moved to Orlando, FL and went to school at Full Sail University. At the age of 21, he and a classmate/friend created their production company Roll The Dice LLC, and made their first short film under the brand, "The Letter". Over the last 10 years, Timothy has been directing short films, commercials, and music videos while creating a new standard of storytelling and presentation to independent filmmaking.
Since I was a kid, all I ever wanted to do was make movies. I would sit in my room and sketch scenes from all the movies that I loved. As I have grown older, that passion has grown with me. Over the years I have directed music videos, commercials, and short films but I've always known that directing and writing a feature film was the goal. With the help of my business partner and friend, Stewart Spraggins, I was finally able to achieve my dream of directing my first feature film entitled Young and Reckless.
Three years ago, Stewart and I came up with a concept for a script that was originally created for someone else. After I wrote the script and presented it- it was rejected, so we decided to try to shoot a couple of scenes from the film on our own. Due to scheduling conflicts, we failed to shoot the three scenes but we knew the potential of the script. While I wanted to put the film on hold for a while, Stewart had a vision of the film, so on December 29, 2018, we met and he proposed we shoot the entire feature film with our own money. Since I had already started pre-production on a short film I wanted to do, I wasn’t convinced but Stewart was persistent, and eventually, I decided to do it.
Over the next 15 months, there were a lot of hurdles that we had to overcome, with it being a small independent, self-funded film but we were able to overcome and show the world that all you need is a story and the passion to make it happen.
Not only does this film showcase the trials and tribulations of black men and women in America, it also shows the combination of years of hard work and skills that I have developed since I was a kid. They are many personal elements of this film for me. I tried to tap into things that affected me as a teenager growing up and how they influenced the decisions I made.
Music also played a huge part in the storytelling element for this film. Getting the audience engaged not only visually, but sonically as well so the audience can feel like they are apart of the experience.
This was one of the most challenging projects that I’ve ever embarked on, yet it's THE most rewarding. I'm extremely proud of this film, and I’m proud to be able to showcase this film to the world.
