Spencer Lackey is a NYC-based filmmaker with a lifelong passion for horror. “You Are Here” is Spencer’s directorial debut following massive success creating horror shorts for social media. His original content has garnered a combined 5.1 million followers across TikTok and Instagram. Spencer is thrilled to be translating his scares to the big screen!
My theory is this: People who love horror films were traumatized by one as a kid. For me, it was the 1997 mini-series version of The Shining - specifically, the bathtub lady from room 217. And ever since I ruined bathrooms for myself at age 10, I've been inextricably attached to horror movies. A year and a half ago, I was lucky enough to find success on social media showing other people my nightmares. Now, I get to share them in a short film.
“You Are Here” tells the story of a young man haunted by a traumatic childhood memory. At first, he’s locked out of his house. Then, his mom won’t text him back. Suddenly, he’s launched into another dimension where we expose his greatest fears: his loss of innocence, and the monster that lurks inside his trauma.
“You Are Here” could not have been possible without the love and support of both my friends and family as well as the wonderful community of horror fans that engage with my content on social media. It's because of this combined effort that we were able to make a film that feels both surreal and terrifying as well as intricately personal.
We gathered outstanding talents across social media, including Jonathan Bartz, Forest Kids Collective, Paulina Nguyen, The MacFarlane Bros, VoltJoltSPC, and Safe and Sound Post. We had actors like Kevin Keppy, who's played creatures in horror masterpieces such as "Smile" and "Cabinet of Curiosities," as well as the 5-year old, horror enthusiast, Vance Carraher, who acted alongside his real-life mom, Dayci Brookshire. Our DP was the ever-talented Nick Massey, whose experience ranges from broad comedy to grisly horror. My executive producer and editor is Ryan Vergara, my best friend who made everything happen, and my writer is my longtime artistic collaborator, Mickey Tropeano.
You Are Here was a nightmare-come-true, and I look forward to the films to come where I can work with ALL of these people again and again.
