World's Greatest Dad

LOG LINE

Sometimes being the WORLD’S GREATEST DAD doesn’t make you the “BEST DAD EVER.”

SYNOPSIS

CHARLIE is an overachieving father who lives vicariously through his children and his smartphone. The WORLD’S GREATEST DAD who is not shy about letting you know.

One typical Saturday morning we find him alternating his attention from the news feed on his phone to his young daughters; amidst trying to rush off to run errands for his wife while she gets her chance to enjoy her Saturday Morning sleep in. Making his way out the door his youngest daughter clamors for his attention as she slides a colourful beaded bangle onto his wrist with big block letters proudly proclaiming him “WORLD’S GREATEST DAD.” He kisses her ‘Thank you’ on the top of her head as he slips out the door.

Throughout a series of chance encounters on his errand run, Charlie soon learns that being the 'World's Greatest Dad' doesn't necessarily make you the 'Best Dad Ever.'

Director Biography - NIFCO Film Class - Winter 2023, Brad Gover (Film Mentor)

Stand-up comedian, playwright, and performer Stephen Coombs added screenwriter and filmmaker to his repertoire, with the debut screening of his 2023 Short Film, “World’s Greatest Dad.” A collaborative effort developed through the NIFCO Introduction to Film course.

Stephen’s foray into film follows on the heels of his most recent one-man show Here & Now; a deeply personal yet relatable portrayal of his journey with cancer that is equally touching and hilarious in its observations.

Through Stephen's multi-faceted career, one thing that has held constant is the importance of storytelling. Specifically sharing stories inspired by personal life experiences.

Stephen's newest short film, 'Kneaded,' developed through NIFCO's First Time Filmmaker program and the support of Arts NL, is a short drama that explores the importance of self-care for those who find themselves filling the role of primary caregiver within the cultural context of traditional Newfoundland family dynamics.

He is presently working on developing his next short film with hopes to adopting his latest full stage production into a feature film / series.
