Quokka, the artistic duo of Alkistis Voulgari and Mina Kouvara, went on a research journey in Samothrace to connect with local women, especially farmers. Along the way they met Lemonia, Evaggelia, Eleni, Valentina, Zafeiria, Efthymitsa and shared moments of life, laughter and local food! Each was a unique experience, but all were connected to the island's past and the challenges of everyday life.
In the land of Samothrace, with its wild nature, in the shadows of Saos, the soul still feels free and hope runs through the heart again.

On inspiration:
The inspiration was the island of Samothrace, its historical background and its beautiful nature, but above all the people, especially the women. We were interested to see how people interact with the environment, to learn about their lives, as Samothrace is considered to be an "acritic" island of Northern Greece. Through the women's stories we found out that most of them had emigrated to Germany - there was a large community of Samothracians in Stuttgart - they worked there and came back. It was so exciting and inspiring to connect with them and learn from them how they maintain the home, the family, the rural work, to hear them tell their stories. Surely, these women are ordinary heroes - heroes of everyday life. They give lessons in sustainability, independence, freedom, self-reliance and inner strength.

On intention:
If we say that the earth is our mother, the Women of Saos express the Mother archetype through their life stories. The message is to be self-reliant and free, to respect nature and the environment, to enjoy life and to face all circumstances with a sense of humour. Our intention with these interviews was to learn for ourselves, to be moved and then to share our experience with the world.
It is always important for these stories to be heard, because we are all special - famous, well-known or not. Oral narration of life stories is one of the most powerful and authentic documents in the history of mankind.
