Director Statement

The film “Witch Blood” is the culmination of my studies in the Postgraduate Program “Lighting Design” with a focus on Cinematic Lighting at the Hellenic Open University. The production of this film was a bet with myself, a test of the knowledge I gained during my studies and a challenge to my creative ability. From the beginning of the whole process, I was sure of the cinematic genre I wanted to serve: horror cinema. It is a genre that I have loved since my childhood - zombies, ghosts, vampires and every kind of monster that paraded from the television screen initially and from the cinema screen later. Along the way, I discovered how multifaceted the genre is, with all its subgenres, but also the potential it has to be not only escapist entertainment but also an artistic field of reflection.
Although it is not my first film, it is certainly the most ambitious. From the beginning I wanted to create a work that I would feel real satisfaction from. The challenge of taking on the most important roles in the production was great. Producer, screenwriter, director, director of photography, editor. There were many moments of anxiety, pressure, disappointment but also joy. I was lucky to have great collaborators, who regardless of their experience (or lack thereof) worked or rather collaborated, giving their best. “Witch Blood” is a supernatural horror film about a young girl, Daphne, who, without having realized and accepted her magical bloodline, becomes the target of a threatening force in the form of an old woman. My goal was to create the atmosphere of terror and menace through image and sound, without resorting to cheap jump scares and gore.
