From a simple question, we travel through futuristic imaginaries. a game, an experiment.
Cats, children, extemporaneous beings all in correlation in this short film directed by Thais de Almeida Prado and Fernanda Sanchez Valdivieso.

Cactus: generally succulent and edible. large flowers, nocturnal flowering, pollinated by insects, moths, bats. wide anatomical adaptation. dry and hot environments. deserts. semi-arid, caatingas, cerrados. dimorphic branches, reduced leaves, photosynthetic. certain species develop ephemeral leaves, which last for a short period of time while a new bud is still in its early stages of development. psychoactive agents. ruins of civilization.

Director Biography - Thais de Almeida Prado, Fernanda Sanchez Valdivieso

THAÍS DE ALMEIDA PRADO is a filmmaker, multidisciplinary artist and actress. Her work permeates the boundaries between dance, film, theatre, visual arts, music and literature, often working in collaboration with other artists.

FERNANDA VALDIVIESO is a language researcher, multidisciplinary artist, art educator, curious about the studies of bodies in transit. A nomad for 14 years, she is interested in fables of temporary identities, paths, narrative plots, objects, children's games, escapes, wonderful randomness and unnoticed passages.

THAÍS DE ALMEIDA PRADO é uma cineasta, artista multidisciplinar e atriz. Seu trabalho permeia as fronteiras entre a dança, o cinema, o teatro, as artes visuais, a música e a literatura, trabalhando muitas vezes em colaboração com outros artistas.

FERNANDA VALDIVIESO é pesquisadora de linguagens, artista multidisciplinar, arte educadora, curiosa pelos estudos dos corpos em trânsitos. Nômade há 14 anos, se interessa por fabulações de identidades temporárias, caminhos, tramas narrativas, objetos, brincadeiras infantis, fugas, aleatoriedades maravilhosas e passagens despercebidas.

Director Statement

"Will we all become cacti in the future?" This question is the starting point for an experiment: a film that doesn’t tell a conventional story but weaves sensations, images, and provocations. We, Thaís de Almeida Prado and Fernanda Sanchez Valdivieso, were invited by the artistic residency Pink Umbrellas to create a non-narrative film. Between the freedom and isolation of the pandemic, the question arose like a breath in the desert: who are we, and who will we become? And so, the journey began.

Cacti. Succulent, adaptable, resilient. In the silence of deserts and scrublands, they survive on very little. They sprout, bloom at night, and mold themselves to time and space. They are also agents of transformation – psychoactive, ephemeral, survivors.

During our creation, between Berlin and Curitiba, we dialogued with the future through the present. Cats, children, ruins, empty spaces, and imaginary landscapes come together as extemporaneous beings in correlation. The science fiction we propose is not a ready-made dystopia but an open space: a serious play, an essay on survival and transformation.

At its core, this is a film about frictions: between the organic and the synthetic, the beautiful and the hostile, the past and what’s to come. It is a moving interrogation that echoes through arid landscapes and empty interiors. Perhaps we will all become cacti in the future. Or perhaps we already are.

Será que no futuro seremos todos cactos? Esta pergunta é o ponto de partida para um experimento: um filme que não conta uma história convencional, mas tece sensações, imagens e provocações. Nós, Thaís de Almeida Prado e Fernanda Sanchez Valdivieso, fomos convidadas pela residência artística Pink Umbrellas para criar um filme não narrativo. Entre a liberdade e o isolamento da pandemia, a pergunta surgiu como um sopro no deserto: quem somos e quem seremos? E assim, a jornada começou.

Cactos. Suculentos, adaptáveis, resilientes. No silêncio dos desertos e caatingas, eles sobrevivem com pouco. Brotam, florescem à noite, se moldam ao tempo e ao espaço. São também agentes de alterações – psicoativos, efêm eros, sobreviventes.

Durante nossa criação, entre Berlin e São Paulo, dialogamos com o futuro através do presente. Gatos, crianças, ruínas, espaços vazios e paisagens imaginárias se encontram como seres extemporâneos em correlação. A ficção científica que propomos não é uma distopia pronta, mas um espaço aberto: uma brincadeira séria, um ensaio sobre sobrevivência e transformação.

No fundo, este é um filme sobre fricções: entre o orgânico e o sintético, o belo e o hostil, o passado e o que está por vir. É uma interrogação em movimento que ecoa por paisagens secas e interiores vazios. Talvez sejamos mesmo todos cactos no futuro. Ou talvez já sejamos.
