Director Statement

This film gives a glimpse of the paintings, poetry and filmmaking of the enigma that is Paul Yates, an artist who highly values his personal privacy, preferring to remain elusive. Hitherto he has closely protected his anonymity turning down many film proposals over the years but remarkably he agreed to the production of this film, albeit with some caveats.

Paul, whose work is highly acclaimed worldwide, has his studio in a disused hayloft in the grounds of a large country house and it is here where our film is set, drawing the viewer into the amazing world of Paul Yates, painter, poet and filmmaker.

In the truest form of collaboration, 'Who Is Paul Yates?' was developed over a few weeks and filmed in two days. Discovering the space was like getting a glimpse into the workings of this mysterious and often hilarious artist's mind, where his wit was matched by his creative verve.
