White Knife
The year is 2097.
In late 2010s, drought from climate change became a worldwide problem. Farm land was untenable and starvation became a major killer. To combat starvation and skyrocketing food prices, over farming happened which led to a new dust bowl in the American West. With food becoming even less after the start of the dust bowl, war broke out between nations over food and water. Economic collapse came as countries and companies could no longer support the world’s population.
The Kashmir border tension exploded into total war between India and Pakistan, which culminated in the two countries destroying each other with nuclear weapons. Due to the loss of a whole subcontinent of vegetation and the worldwide damage of fallout, climate change accelerated with the sharp decrease in vegetation to combat CO2 formation. The oceans turned more acid and the ice caps melted at an alarming rate.
Countries collapsed as a result of these many stress conditions. The United States collapsed and state governments took the mantle of government. Most states formed into Unions with other surrounding states to provide support and trade. This led to small border wars between regions that continues to this day.
By 2055, the rise in sea level has covered many of the world’s great coastal cities, including New Orleans, Miami, New York. This has led to refugees across the continent, and with continued economic depression, squalor and poverty driven sub-classes is common around the world.
Technology progress as a whole came to a standstill as the economies of the world collapsed. Technology is typically only in the hands of the rich and governments, though it’s not much advanced and in many ways less advanced than present day. Practicality and usefulness is the mantra of progress.
Of the White Knife Order:
As anarchy and disorder fell on the world, religion attendance and belief skyrocketed and it, as a unifying force, sought to establish some form of order in the chaos. During the collapse, a religious order had gotten sole control of a biotechnology that gave people increase strength, stamina, speed, dexterity. They used this to create an order of law enforcers that had the power of police, jury, judge, and executioner. They were trained in religion, law, and combat and then sent across the South to restore order and protect the people. They are given a White Deer Antler Handle Knife upon graduation and acts as their badge.
When the states were able to restore a semblance of order, Christian influence in the South was at a previously unseen high. So when the Dixie Union was formed from most of the Southern States, they were authorized to maintain their mission and formed as the head of the Dixie Bureau of Investigation.
Though they are respected and feared across the South, there is a growing resentment to their unlimited power to enforce the law as they choose. Also, the state governments are starting to resent the idea of an outside body that can operate unfettered in their borders. The White Knife order tends to follow the idea that they answer only to God.
