Experiencing Interruptions?

Whirling of Lament on a Lonely Planet

"Whirling of Lament" is a vertical video work that explores the emotional and ecological resonance of isolation, containment, and planetary fragility. Filmed entirely with a 360º camera, the piece features dancer Lorenza Di Calogero in a seated posture of lamentation, drawing inspiration from the expressive vocabulary of Martha Graham. Her arms spiral around the camera in close proximity, creating intense visual distortions that sculpt the viewer’s perceptual space.

As the motion unfolds, the environment appears to respond—whirling, contracting, and reshaping. The space transforms into a tiny, vulnerable planet and then into a circular prison that encloses the figure in a continuous loop. This visual arc serves as a metaphor for the Earth’s current condition: beautiful, fragile, and increasingly encircled by the consequences of human impact.

The expressionistic imagery is accompanied by an original score by Blas Payri, composed with persistent ostinatos and sudden bursts of energy. Spatialized through binaural techniques, the sound moves around the listener in rotating patterns, reinforcing the tension and sense of entrapment within this distorted, looping world.
